Page-Turners and Practice Runs: Balancing Books and Mom Life
I often get asked how I find time to read with all the different hats I wear. As a full-time middle school teacher, I’m constantly on the go, shuttling my kids to practices and games after school. Finding a quiet moment to sit down and read is rare. I have to admit, I’m not reading as many novels as I did last year. The time just isn’t there. However, I’ve found a way to keep my reading habit alive by adding audiobooks to my TBR list. They’re the perfect solution for fitting reading into my daily routine. Whether I’m lesson planning, answering emails, picking up toys around the house, or tackling dishes and laundry, audiobooks are my go-to. I do love a physical book, but during the school year, it’s hard to find time to sit quietly and read—unless it’s 9 o'clock at night after I’ve finally put the kids to bed or on a weekend when I can actually spend time with them outside of a sports event.
I honestly don’t know how I managed to read so many books last year... well, I do. I was a bit selfish, shutting myself off from everything else so I could get lost in my stories. This year, I’ve made a conscious effort to be more present. I used to read during my kids’ practices or at the park, but I realized I wasn’t giving them the attention they deserved. Imagine them looking over at me, hoping to see that they nailed a move or made a basket, only to find me lost in a book. That disappointment? I see it now when I observe other parents, many of whom are glued to their phones while their kids are looking for their approval. This is why audiobooks have become my new reading ritual—they allow me to enjoy my favorite stories while still being fully present with my children.
I’ve always had a love for books. Back in the day, I’d head to Barnes & Noble, scan the shelves, and pick whatever cover caught my eye—I’m a total cover girlie. These days, my TBR list grows thanks to recommendations from avid readers I follow on Instagram. Reading—whether it’s exploring new places, diving into complex ideas, or stepping into someone else’s shoes—is one of the best ways to become more well-rounded and empathetic. I know reading isn’t everyone’s thing, but I truly believe that if you give it a real shot, it could become your next favorite hobby. And no, you don’t have to dive into magical worlds filled with fae and dragons (unless that’s your vibe). You might find just as much joy and meaning in personal growth books or historical fiction.
Reading can transport you to places you’ve never been, introduce you to people you’ve never met, and immerse you in conflicts you’d never encounter in everyday life.
I’d much rather get lost in a book than binge-watch a Netflix series. There’s something deeply personal about being part of a character’s journey—experiencing their thoughts, emotions, and inner struggles—that just hits differently than watching it all unfold on a screen. Reading invites you into their world in a way that feels more intimate and immersive.
So the next time you find yourself clicking through your streaming services, wondering what to watch next, consider picking up a novel instead. If you don’t have one lying around, do the next best thing: head to your local bookstore—Target, Barnes & Noble, wherever—and browse the shelves. Read a few covers, see what grabs your attention, and choose the one that speaks to you. You might be surprised by how quickly you get hooked.
